An Outdoor Kitchen: Bringing The Flavour Outside

Saskatchewan summers are synonymous with outdoor living.

With snow on the ground for half of the year, we jump at every chance to be outdoors as soon as the snow melts. Who doesn't love lazy days spent in the backyard? For that reason alone, it is no surprise that an outdoor kitchen is on everyone’s wish list. They are viewed as a glamorous and fun addition to a home. But is building an outdoor kitchen right for you? As with anything, especially where a financial investment is concerned, there are pros and cons to consider before jumping in to trade that barbecue grill for something a little fancier.

The Pros

Outdoor kitchens can be a great addition to your home and lifestyle not only for functionality when entertaining during those hot Saskatchewan summers, but because they add to the resale value of your property. Seen as a sophisticated, trendy, and functionally attractive addition to your living space, they can be a hot selling point if you ever decide to move.

During the time you own your home, an outdoor kitchen is great for entertaining, and that is one of the most practical arguments in favour of construction. A kitchen outside makes food prep an enjoyable group activity and keeps heat and cooking odors out of the house.

The Cons

While there are many benefits to having an outdoor kitchen, there can be some drawbacks. A kitchen outside might not make the top of the list as a necessary expense, since you already have a kitchen inside. One of the biggest disadvantages of outdoor kitchens is that you need fair weather conditions in order to enjoy them. As with any outdoor living space, a kitchen is subject to weather conditions. If it is a windy, rainy, or swelteringly hot day in the middle of August, cooking outdoors might not be practical or enjoyable.

The kitchenware and appliances that you store outside will have increased wear and tear on account of being exposed to the elements; they are also potentially vulnerable to the risk of theft.

An outdoor kitchen can bring a trendy level of sophistication to any home. But before jumping on the bandwagon, weigh the pros and cons to make an informed decision that works for you and your family.
